What Is Grievous Bodily Harm?
Grievous bodily harm (GBH) is one of the most serious assault offences under NSW law. Under sections 33 and 35 of the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW), GBH with intent carries a maximum penalty of 25 years’ imprisonment, while reckless GBH carries up to 10 years (or 14 years if committed in company). GBH is defined as “really serious” harm, including permanent disfigurement, destruction of a foetus, or transmission of a grievous bodily disease.
